The need for frequent loop disinfection is undoubtedly a factor of the environment in which the rebreather is stored. If you have very high humidity and heat like I do living on the side of a rain forest mountain in Hawaii, disinfection before storage is a requirement. I bought a 10 pound pail of veterinarian Virkon. That is enough to make 120 gallons of 1% solution. It was so cheap that not only do I use it to disinfect my rebreather, but I also use it to keep the mildew from growing on my lanai (patio) where I have my fill station, and even the walls in my house. It does not degrade rubber or fabric like bleach does, and I can mix a bottle up very quickly. I put a bit in my clothes wash and if I forget to put the load immediately in the dryer, it doesn't start mildewing before I get home from work like it normally would in Hawaii. Virkon is the sh#t! You can buy veterinarian Virkon at QC Supply here, although it has gone up a bit since last year.
