Tom Like why the Brits in the RN are still called "Limeys"... <or> Rum and Coke with a twist of lime anyone? Tom, give us the 30 second version of the acupressure you describe? And welcome back and glad you're back with us, BTW. This is an excellent thread. Great stuff. Dave

![]() | HI GUYS When I did my Rebreather course the instructor told us the best thing for this was Fanta. So we put water in a scrubber and put a small amount on our tongue, Wow how this can burn then put on Fanta and the burning just went. Maybe this works in the same way as coke, but not sure. David |

I think vodka lime and soda would be better <or> Rum and Coke with a twist of lime anyone? Tom, give us the 30 second version of the acupressure you describe? And welcome back and glad you're back with us, BTW. This is an excellent thread. Great stuff. Dave vodka for pain relief, lime for neutralisation and soda water for rehydration. will need to add something to the first aid kit on the boat, thanks for the ideas everyone.

![]() ![]() | Re: Caustic Cocktails - First Aid / Treament Can we know of the potency of CAUSTICUM- to be used ? Only a homeopathic physician can actually prescribe a homeopathic remedy over a certain strength. However, Tom's wife, Patti, is a homeopath, & on her advice Tom bought c. pellets available in, I believe, 6x (the lower the number before the "x," the stronger the remedy. "CL" is less powerful than "x"). Tom handed me between 3-5 & had me keep them under my tongue until they melted. Then no liquid for ten minutes. My memory on the amount of c. used may be slighly off as at one point a nurse walked in & had me drink water- while I had the c. in my mouth. So we had to restart the process.Would like to know to stock in my first aid box. Shil There was another post on Fanta- any soda will do, lime juice/lemon juice/ vinegar & other acidics will also work. Just don't swallow, & don't use an acid that is not in the human "tolerable" zone.

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Re: Caustic Cocktails - First Aid / Treament One addendum to my write up on pH that Peri posted earlier.... after a bit more thought triggered by some discussions with others I would like to clarify one point... There is no need to exactly match the alkalinity of the caustic by washing your mouth out with an acid equality strong. By that logic, if the caustic cocktail was the usual pH of 14... the best mouth wash would be sulfuric acid with a pH of 0 ... which would be equally BAD. The concept in this case is just to neutralize the very strong alkalinity of the small amount of caustic cocktail liquid (with perhaps some tiny particles of absorbent still floating around in your mouth) by flushing with a mild acidic liquid that is used in large amounts. Thus several copious mouth rinses of any kind of carbonated beverage that happens to be handy will be every bit as effective as using something stronger such as vinegar or lime juice. In reality, assuming you have a pretty good case of 'pizza mouth' burns from the caustic, the last thing you would want to do is further irritate these tissues with something that was too strong an acid. Better to use much more of something a bit milder. Liquids like carbonated beverages might hurt a good bit less than acids like lime juice. Don't lose sight of the fact that a lot of plain old water, even slightly alkaline sea water, would eventually accomplish the same thing, just take a bit longer. One last reminder, rinse and spit, don't swallow... |
