Re: DEMA 2007: Impressions from those staying at home...

The unit that you asked about Phi is not a unit yet. Its a rapid diver system made by zeagle, that is halfway through a conversion into a Ray like CCR. This is pretty darn neat, but not completed yet. Battery on the laptop is about dead, so will post a bit more later.

As far as I can see the neatest things at dema are the new cis mk 6, more on that later too, and the Sentinal, which I will have more info on after I chat with kevin this afternoon and get a run through.

I also got a nice demo on the Stingray from Curt Harbold, I hope to get an article up on my site soon on that one.

Having a great time here in Florida, cheers Mates!

Re: DEMA 2007: Impressions from those staying at home...

I found it great to see so many rebreathers and products oriented to our market at DEMA this year. Some things that stand out for me:

The Juergensen CCR. Looks like all components are well made. Some little extras are manual injection components that come off of the unit (while connected and pressurized) so that you can dunk in water to see if there is a leak during your equipment set up and test. A nice convenience feature if you ask me.

The Golem CCR. What a great idea to experiment with sidemounted counterlungs. Credit to Jakub for innovation.

Dive Rite came out with a new carry case for the Optima that will fit either under an airplane seat or in the overhead bin. The pack stores the rebreather components very nicely and really makes the Optima compact and great for the traveler.

The Titan should start production delivery by January or just after that. It has a soft case similar in construction material to the Optima. I think that they said that the unit will be 38 pounds fully prepared. The Titan incorporates backmounted counterlungs that wrap over the top of diver's shoulders (but just to the throat area). This will keep the WOB down while keeping the front area uncluttered. I believe that the unit is just shy of 6 inches thick and has a very streamlined profile.

There were also a number of other new units nearing completion (I know we have all heard that before ) for production soon. Even if they take a while to come out, the point is that our market is growing, and we will all benefit from this in terms of cost and especially overall improvement to rebreathers as more are used and more is learned.

A newbe's view...I have no regrets I recently bought an Apecs 2.5 as nothing at DEMA appears to be all that. The HH/GG is ok but how's it different from a Hammermeg with a BOV aside from maybe initial cost? Also, most divers on most dives don't need a 7.5lb scrubber as it would be a waste of lime.
The new CIS I'll pass for now as it looks like it was made by Mattel.
The OR is designed for commercial stuff for now so nothing new for the little consumer like myself. Maybe later?..and BTW, no way that thing's gonna' ever sell for less than $5000 unless they can sell 500K units a year or something.
I could see the Sentinel being ok but it's plumbing looks a bit fragile under the cowling, same goes for its somewhat exposed CL (or CLs?).
I'm dissapointed about the CO2 monitors that we were promised. What's up with that?
Also, where the hell is the Tesseract? That one sure revolutionized the market, didn't it?
That's it, I'm going diving with my cutting-edge Meg.
Cheers
Tibby
Tibby,

Couple comments...

- Your purchase of a Meg with APECS 2.5 if definately not a bad one but there was a lot of great stuff at DEMA that will be further reported on as the Rebreather World Staff gets back on the ground.

- The Sentinel is an quite a piece of engineering. The CL's are completely protected in the case. Kevin has taken his experiance from the Boris and has really taken it to the next level with things like automatic calibration etc.. (The head senses when the scrubber has been removed and will automatically calibrate the unit based on air.) There are also various options for scrubbers and OTS Counter Lungs... The only two things that I was not excited about with the rig was the BOV (Size) and the "Thickness" of the rig. This is due to the large diameter of the scrubber.

- The CIS is also a very interesting rig. From a technical perspective they have a very inovative approach to cell calibration and redundancy. There is a nice white paper on their website outlining the approach. Their overall focus is on "simplicity" and along with it they bring some rather inovative ideas. I agree that the unit is not as robust as some it may need to be but I would expect that will evolve.

- KJ and GG have done a very nice job with the new HH CCR. There are scrubber options other than the 7.8 lbs version. Both larger and smaller. The configuration is very flexible when it comes to 02 injection allowing for anything from MCCR to full CCR or a combination. It's also nice seeing the focus on providing a BMCL option to those that want something other than an OTS option. As far as the electronics go, as previously posted, deco is avalible on both the primary and secondary today. I would expect that anyone considering the Meg will also give this unit a very hard look.

- On the C02 front, I agree with you. I was hoping to see more movement here since last year.

While I did spend two days on the show floor I am definately looking forward to all of the interviews that Stuart and the team will be posting shortly.

Dive Safe...

Mark

So much for the impressions being from those staying at home ...

Odd and indeed disappointing about the CO2 sensors.
No news from Tom Rose? Divelife? Others? At all?

Some German guy named Göcke announced sometime early September
that he had a working plug-in CO2 monitoring system with fiber optic HUD that will be available by BOOT 2008 at the latest. For less than €1000.

I did see the CO2 sensor that Tom Rose had and he was talking about how to interface it with several rebreathers and the Shearwater.

Do you have a verdict that you are prepared to share? Does anybody else?

Open Revolution units were on our stand (301 - 305, with Micropore), working, with CO2 sensors.

We had two units there, one SSUBA and one SSUBA. The SSUBA system was a production unit. Two people on our stand were clients, explaining commercial diving with the system, and another was from the manufacturer explaining that they just made 16 and were pleased when those worked first time. The SSUBA unit was fully injection moulded in Kynar, not a prototype.

We demonstrated the CO2 sensing with the PFD (HUD) and voice annunciation, and also the CO2 reporting to the top console.

The CO2 sensing has been tested in manned underwater tests and in machine tests - the latter go to 1400msw on every unit (twice the physiological limit of a human). It works in air, trimix and heliox. It incorporates a He sensor.

Alex,

I stand corrected... Dispite the number of times I stopped by the booth I missed that in the conversations. So many things to see... So little time...
