$1700 one-time-use bailout

This thing looks pretty cool.

Very small. 9400 psi? The video shows 4900 psi, and indicates that the cartridges are replaceable. But maybe there is a new and improved version.

Imagine this might work just fine for bailing out on dives above 50m or so. But the price might make you think twice (or perhaps a dozen times) about coming off your loop.

Re: $1700 one-time-use bailout

Let's do some maths

THe cylinders are (according to their scale) about 3.75cm wide and 8cm long not counting the tops and bottoms.

A cylinder of that size has a volume of about 90 cubic centimetres - if the walls have no thickness. Let's be generous and say 90cc for the whole thing counting the tops and bottoms and allowing a little bit for wall thickness.

If you fill two of them to 9400 psi (say 640 Bar) then you have a total gas volume of (drum roll) 115 litres.

If you use it then you get to pay $1700 for a refill.

Altenatively, if you really want about 1/5th of the bailout available from a BOV on a 3l cylinder, then you could buy 2 Spare Airs. (One obviously wouldn't be enough because it only has a capacity of 85 litres)

Mind you if you only fill it to 4900 psi then it's only got about 60l of air in it - a lot lesss than the Spare Air.

Just to labout the point. If you're a bit frightened at 50m and taking 2 litre breaths, each breath is going to cost you about $176 and you won't quite get 10 of them.

Re: Does this make Rebreathers Obsolete?

Even if the information is partially correct, it has to be a positive thing. Bail out is getting smaller, and while as someone pointed out in another post while it currently equates to about $176 per breath, like all technologies it will eventually come down in price - military demand, commercial demand and ultimately filtering down to an affordable price range for humble divers.
