This is just my opinion, if we're going to spend thousands on a rebreathers and training then why cheap out on the very thing that every human being needs to survive. Sure it all comes from the same source but I think what we really need to address how the cylinders have been handledand cared for. If I were a gambling man I would bet that O2 cylinders meant for life support applications are handled by the end user with alot more care and respect than O2 clyinders that has been sitting in some greasy, dirty garage. I rather my O2 come from a reputable source.

I've been going the UHP route rather than the welder's grade. I believe the grade I opted for was a research grade from my gas supplier. Higher cost but it gives me some more peace of mind.

I'm on my second J of industrial O2. A third of the price.

Unless the end user leaves the valve open after it's drained, I can't see how being in a dirty environment makes any difference at all. IIRC the tins all have a vacuum applied across them so gas contamination is unlikely. The only difference is in the QC process - how many samples per batch are tested.

Think about it - if you are filling lots of O2 cylinders on a industrial scale, aren't you going to make sure the things are clean and safe? The penalty is a big old bang... And if you supply contaminated O2 to any of your markets, medical or otherwise, then you will get done as you are advertising a certain purity. That's BEFORE the bad PR kicks in.

There's a debate on the Inspo List about one UK gas supplier BOC ceasing sales of gas to non-diveshops (simplistic explanation). So people like us will either bin BOC, or will start using non-diving grades. So your initial question is very relevant over here!
