Displaying Tissue Models in Deco Software

Hi Folks,

I'm updating XS and one of things that is still left to do is doing some kind of visual representation of the tissue model.

The question is, what would be the best format for it. Before I put in the time, what exactly would you like to see in a graph? To me the line graphs in Decoplanner were very pretty, they looked like they were showing something important but I never thought they were especially useful. On the other hand, I thought the bar graphs in Proplanner were much clearer but again I don't think they were showing anything useful.

I'm planning on being able to walk through the dive minute by minute showing the tissue loadings, is there anything else that would be useful to show?

Cheers,

Stuart

Stuart,

How about showing the ceiling for each tissue? To me this would be an intuitive way to show deco information (Tissue 3 says i can go up to 3m, but Tissue 4 says I need to stop at 6m)

I'd like to see the compartment curves as Janos describes. More importantly though, I want to see what gases each tissue has in them, and the effect on the compartments of changing the gases. This would show the effects of flushing with different dils etc on a moment-by-moment basis.

Re: Displaying Tissue Models in Deco Software

What is your objective? Do you want the tool to teach or just convey the information?

I personally love the table in DecoPlanner but it displays things in a traditional format (the colors are nice though). It is great for me since I know what I am looking at and looking for in the profile.

I do not start teaching concepts with those graphs though. I start with GasMan (http://www.gasmanweb.com/). This is a graphical display of a three compartment model. I always used two anesthetic gasses (Sevo and Des) to prove the points in the past but Jim is helping me add He. The software had Nitrogen but until I met him (last week), I was not sure how that was intended to be used. It works well as a transition because it shows loading and unloading of compartments. Then you can graph plots of the gasses. These look like your traditional M-value plots. From there, showing someone the DecoPlanner plot for the first time is not just a collection of pretty lines.

Keep in mind the only time I teach this is Hyperbaric Medicine Fellows so Anesthestic gasses are a known quantity and basic physiology was well covered in Med School. I am interested in how others do this, I am going to try my first diver this way next week.

It would be nice to see something that can help "bridge" the gap from concept to theory a little more clearly and without changing user interfaces.

Just my 2c,
G

Heh, heh, heh, I did this in MigPlan.Mac back in 1989. Grey for helium, black for nitrogen in the bar graph.
