Re: Following on from the standard bailout mixes thread

There's a simple solution to mitigate rebreathing inert gas on shallow decompression and that's flush the loop with O2 periodically, I am amazed at how few divers I see actually flushing the loop. For sure on an eCCR you can hear the pattern of the solenoid change when you're offgassing shedloads of inerts to the loop on long decos. This also gives the advantage that you're breathing O2 level above setpoint and there's no bouyancy issues with constant solenoid firing.

As for O2 as a constrictor, this only occurs at certain thermal levels and there are many well documented bends from cooling too much as the blood cannot transport gas, so proper thermal considerations on deep dives is essential.

Air breaks - this is just another fallacy created by NOAA plucking numbers out of the air years ago. I won't advocate that other people don't take air breaks, but I never have. But everyone's oxygen tolerance is variable and from day to day it varies, however I have never been a believer in introducing inert gas on decompression, particularly not near ceilings.

Regards

AnneMarie

Quite. The other thing with the regular flushes is that you get to see if the PO2 changes. Once it remains constant for a while, there would (probably) be no more inerts off-gassing. I wouldn't stake the farm on it or anything, but it helps pass the time looking for it on deco.

Yup, that's the one! You know you've stayed too long on the bottom when it's firing with every exhale!!!!

thats prity much all I do at 6m stop is play with the cells n displays, flush, check the cells, see how long they take to drop, to rise, see what the max reachable ppo2 is...hell what is everyone else doing during those long hangs?

Down here, there has been a serious outbreak of Underwater MP3 players.

I've been known to partake in distributing laminated Porn round the other poor fools on the station and checking that my deco beer is cooling nicely in my drysuit pocket
