Excellent write up and wish you had written it prior to when I set my MSB up, just the swagelok fitting specifications would have saved me hours. Where did you get your 200 psi compressor and is it oil free? If it is, could you advise of the make and model.

This is the compressor I use to run my Jetsam booster:
DEWALT D55146 : 200 PSI 4.5 Gallon Electric Wheeled Portable Compressor

They also have an upright model with similar specs. I bought mine at my local Lowe's. Its oil free and is not overtaxed by the Jetsam.

I have the same set up & was interested to see the suggested IP for the drive gas at 130PSI - what fill pressure do you get with this setting? I started out with mine at 140PSI, but found it stalled below my target fill pressure of 200 bar & I now have it set to 150PSI IP & have no problems.

Although the mechanical advantage of the booster is 25:1, practically it is less than that - maybe closer to 20:1 & therefore needing a higher IP on the drive side. Anyone else have this experience?

Great article though & thanks for sharing it.

MarkK
Same exact issue here. I found the IP of the reg is the real factor in how high of PSI you can boost to when using drive gas. 150 psi is what mine is at now.

Re: Haskel Mini Booster Set Up - Article

I boost 120's of O2 to 3500 when it's really cold out. Then by the time i get to FL they are at 4,000 PSI. I also bring a set of double 100's with 20/40 for dil.

That was plenty of gas for ten days of diving. Never had to boost the whole time there. Just trans-filled each day.

I also use the DeWALT mentioned above when not running from a HP bank . Not as fast as when running from HP air, but it does the job.

Re: Haskel Mini Booster Set Up - Article

Great article Richie,

We have just been using that exact unit and found it very efficient. One point that was suggested to us was to fit an in-line filter if we were using a tools compressor. Although, not on the critical side of the booster it is as important to keep that clean also. We had a fine "hair" of PTFE that managed to lodge itself inside and we lost all ability to boost (fortunately at the end of the week). We were driving with a filter-filled twinset so it must have come from the quick-fit connection.

We also had to fill 4 7l mix stages by PP filling and used a digital presure gauge. We were starting with a fresh He "J" but to do all 4 took only just over an hour (C/W a Coltri 80 CFM 240V compressor). Our "mix manager" is very efficient though!! (Herr Mick F).

Although I was not there I hear that it did not take an obcene amount of time to mix up a couple of "Js" to whip-feed the dil bottles either.

Regards,
Midnight

As an infrequent visitor I don't read much, but some things scare me when I do. I did notice all the white tape on the fittings and hoped no-one was using PTFE with oxygen.

Quote: (Originally Posted by BOC)
Standard PTFE tape contains oil; oxygen reacts violently with oil and may spontaneously burn with an explosive force. BOC does not recommend the use of PTFE or other thread sealing components in conjunction with any gas cylinder valves or regulators

Re: Haskel Mini Booster Set Up - Article

I cannot see this "Mini Booster" in the Haskel product catalogue !
Can somebody share the "mini booster" curves and specifications ?
I would like to compare it with the MPS C3 gas booster.
This one has a 39cc high pressure cylinder displacement.

Thanks in advance.
