Drive gas compressor advice needed

Hi guys,

After much of considerations, I have decided to get a non-oil filled compressor in order to drive the Mini Haskel Booster. Since there are many of you guys out there already having this configuration then I would appreciate some advices regarding what's considered good for the job, as well as if you have any tips and advices regarding the setup. My first idea was to connect the booster to a mini bank tank to drive the gas but I guess it's not so practical to get the tank to the dive center every now and then just to fill air.

Best Regards. Wael

Hi,

Would this work?

Spec: 6 bar 115 l/min. 230 V. 1,5 Hk. Max pressure: 8 bar.

Re: Drive gas compressor advice needed

Wael,

I don't think so. It looks small, what you are looking for is a compressor that a professional would use to drive a nail gun.

The one pictured says it puts out 8 bar "max". What you should look for is one that puts out at least 10 bar, but even better would be 12 or so. The reason is that you want to be able to set the regulator on your compressor to match the drive gas pressure your booster needs to run. For instance, mine runs at 10 bar. I found a compressor that puts out 13.7 bar max and the compressor motor kicks in at 11. That way there is always 10 bar available to the booster.

Re: Drive gas compressor advice needed

It's not only a function of the pressure, but also the flow rate. The higher the better.... Also put an inline moisture filter on the unit.

Do you need it to be portable or are you going to keep it in one location?

If portability isn't a requirement, get a unit with a large holding tank.

Re: Drive gas compressor advice needed

Hi,

Really thanks for the feedbacks. Well, I would appreciate some model suggestions actually and perhaps some links. It's going to be fixed in my dive room but the size is an issue for me as the room is looking smaller and smaller with more stuff.

Wael,

This is what I have DEWALT D55146 : 200 PSI 4.5 Gallon Electric Wheeled Portable Compressor , but when we checked about 6 months ago it was not available in europe. It works well with my Jetsam Baby Booster, for a larger booster you would probably want a compressor with a higher flow rate.

Re: Drive gas compressor advice needed

Hi,

I have used a small paint spraying compressor with limited success - similar to one like this DIY Compressors

The reservoir tank is 6l, the drive pressure is 8 bar.

I have found the following limitations with this approach to drive my booster (not a haskel):

1. Compressor has a pressure cut off at 8 bar that I cannot adjust, hence it frequently cuts out just below the pressure required to drive the booster unless I keep the purge valve on the reservoir open slightly, so it never quite reaches 8 bar.

2. The compressor is not designed to run continuously. It has a temperature based cut off that kicks in whenever the motor gets too warm.. so it runs max 15 minutes and then needs to sit to cool down.

3. Drive pressure of 8 bar is not enough to boost to 200 bar in the receiving tank - though this depends on 1. the compression capability of your booster, and 2. the pressure in the tank you are filling from

4. You need a well ventilated room or attach an air vent to the outside world to run the compressor any length of time.

Hope this gives you an idea of what not to buy

Good Luck

Anke

Hi Steve,

Thanks for the link. Unfortunately it's not available in Europe as you mentioned so I would need to look for something similar in the European market and I hope that I can find something with that size.

Makita AC1300/2 20ltr 2hp Air Compressor - Screwfix.com, Where the Trade Buys
something like this is good
volume is probably more important that bar, I've got mine set up so I can hook a cylinder of regulated HP air in, so I can do most of the pumping from the compressor and the last bit with bottled air. (or will be able to when I've got a HP compressor anyway )
