Russian booster advice sought: KN-3B

Hi everyone

We're looking at buying a russian booster mainly for boosting helium but it would be nice if we could boost oxygen once in a while.

The plaque on the booster says KN-3M which is supposed to be a manual machine AFAIK but this one's got a 220 volts single phase electric motor and if it's a conversion which was done after the fact it was done very well.

It looks completely different from the boosters on Dave Sutton's website in terms of the orientation of the cylinders. On Dave's website both the KN-3 and the KN-4 have horisontally mounted opposing cylinders (like a boxer engine) whereas this KN-3M has two vertical cylinders side by side.

Is anybody familiar with the capabilities, maintenance and spares of this machine?

Any advice much appreciated.

Regards
Monty

Re: Russian booster advice sought: KN-3B

Hi Monty,

Good to see another supporter of the ex-Soviet booster regime!

We have a KD-5 model (yours is a KD-3, not KN - Cyrillic alphabet).

Take a look at our post, http://www.rebreatherworld.com/compr...s-booster.html.

Maintenance is straightforward. We needed some new HP lines, but tubing standard st/stl, and an engineer can braze the connections. We got new leather seals made from a UK company, Ashton Seals, The Ashton Group - Sheffield, UK. They cost around GBP70 for 2 sets. They'll also supply the large 'O' rings for the barrels, too.

Other than that, ours did not need any new parts - they're pretty bomb-proof (probably for good reason!), and a good engineer could probably make any spares needed.

Please drop us a line at: info@divetekcyprus.com for any info / advice / booster story-swapping!

Hope that helps, Monty, please stay in touch and keep us updated.

Re: Russian booster advice sought: KN-3B

I have several overhaul parts /tool sets for these, each with multiple sets of leather seals, so if anyone needs seals.... yell.

Monty: Need your address again... PM me.
