If your dive shop is going to do a VIP, they should O2 clean your tank at the same time and sticker it so. In our shop, we won't even do O2 fills unless the O2 cleaning has been done in the last year. Additionally, unless one of our techs did the cleaning, we won't fill them, unless we know the person personally that did the O2 cleaning. Additionally, we want to know where you have gotten the tank filled during the last year. If we are at all suspicious about cleanliness issue, we will require a new cleaning prior to filling. Randy
You expect me to remember every shop and service tech before you filled my tank - bolloks - you wouldnt last 5 minutes in Aus mate - You must have hoodwinked alot of people if they keep comming back for more of that -

Im all for O2 cleaning properly (and regularly ) but that is way over the top

What he said. The bottomline is you can never remove all potential fuel from all the components. You remove what you can & take REASONABLE care to avoid putting any back in. The only factor you know you have under control for sure is the heat. The way you control heat is to fill slowly.
I have had the unfortunate experiance of being on board when we had an O2 fire. A seat on a king valve of a manifold went south & turned into a blow torch. One tender was in between banks of gas and got burned badly (career ending). The other hand was able turn off the bottle valve ( only one bottle of the bank was open, they were leak checking the system) getting a nasty burn on his arm & hand. It was pretty freaky to look at the slag spattered all over the bottles & valves below the failed king valve knowing that if one of the bottles below had become involved the vessle would likely have disappeared in a big fireball. The point is that component (whips, fittings, valves, gauges ect) failure can ruin your day too. Use only top notch stuff & check it often to make sure it is still in good shape.

As I mentioned earlier, it only takes one small O2 fire/explosion to ruin your whole day. Anything less than annual O2 cleaning of all appropriate tanks, regs, valves etc. is irresponsible. Keeping track of who and how your equipment is being filled is just plain common sense. As to whether we are hoodwinking anyone, you are welcome to your own uninformed opinions. We will continue to take the steps we feel are appropriate to keep ourselves, our employees and our customers safe.

Hi all,
Well, I was wondering about the whole O2 clean tank issue. I know about O2 cleaning, read the Oxyhacker book, know about the hydrocarbons etc etc.

But then I hear from various sources, well when they do the annual visual inspection and the dive shop sticks its light into the tank, there goes your O2 cleanliness? True or false?
False, if they clean their tools. True if they are gunky from some other mystery tank.

Other stuff I have read is about air travel, some people argue that, if you check EANx or O2 tanks, and you don't know what happens behind the TSA scene, your tank is no longer O2 clean.
I would not trust foreign filled tanks to be anything close to O2 clean upon return. Triplely distrustful if the compressor was on a boat. Clean your tanks and valves (and regs if in O2 service) when you return.

I doubt TSA does much to contaminate tanks, although you aren't allowed to tape over the opening so lots of lint and dirt could get inside depending on what you've packed them with. I don't know if TSA allows you to tape a clear plastic bag over the opening or not.
