Question Which 02 Decanting Hose Kit

I've just had a 47L tank of O2 delivered, and it is now chained up outside my kitchen (under cover).

I now need a decanting hose in order to charge my 2 or 3 Litre 02 Cylinders for my KISS; they seem to range in price from Ģ80ish to over Ģ300 !!

At one end is the AP Valves AP8K (Ģ80ish) set, which has a button gauge rather than a more accurate larger gauge, but since I'm just going to be decanting (not blending), I guess this will be OK ?

In the Oxy Hackers Companion, it says that it is important to have a needle valve when charging small cylinders with 02, to ensure they are not filled too quickly.

Basically, my question is - Is the AP8K up to the job, or should I opt for a more expensive set up with all the bells and whistles ?

Re: Which 02 Decanting Hose Kit

hmm tricky one!

Obviously your best off with a nice whip with needle valve etc.
But if your careful the AP one will be OK, really it does depend on how confident you feel about opening normal valves a little bit?

I started with a needled valved whip - got it second hand though

I think Divelife do the SAP whip for a little less than SAP

Re: Which 02 Decanting Hose Kit

If you're not going to blend, but going to decant O2 into small tanks, the priority is on a good needle valve. Gauges (especially precision and/or digital ones) are the more spendy parts of whips. Try to get a custom whip with a basic analog gauge, but with a good needle valve.

The next thing you now need is a booster.

Have fun.

Been there.

Pure O2 gear to pure O2 I might take the chance and just crack the valve to decant but never on something that has been compressor filled. I would go for a needle valve and make sure the whip can be rebuild to add a nice digital gauge later.

It won't be long before there is helium standing next to the O2.

I use the AP one. I took off the silly button thing and stuck on an old spg from my twinset. Maybe I'm just lucky, but my mixes are usually within +-1%.

Ask AP to send you the interchangeable nozzle thing. You unscrew the DIN fitting and screw in a bullnose. So, you can then go J to twinset/3li or twinset/3li to twinset/3li with just an allen key. I bought a male bullnose to female DIN from SAP which lives in the O2 J so I don't have to muck about with the allen key too much though. Ģ30 though.

Re: Which 02 Decanting Hose Kit

Iīve been mixing both OC and CCR cylinders for 10 years without any needle valve and canīt see why I should bother to get one (Maybe I change my mind if I ever try one, I donīt know).I think is more relevant to spend the money on a digital gauge.

A needle valve for carefully regulating O2 flow to small cylinders is important. Warm O2 tanks during transfilling/ boosting make me cautious. Hot O2 tanks during transfilling/ boosting make me VERY nervous.

IMHO the chief reason, however, for having a quality needle valve as close to the supply cylinder as possible is to cover your butt. It just might prevent an O2 fire when a poorly maintained supply tank valve- that the gas supplier thought might make just a few more trips to the field before repair/ replacement- sends a huge slug of hp O2 down the whip with its heat of compression looking for that small bit of whatever to complete the fire triangle. I’ve run into several bad tank valves over the years, and was very, very glad my needle valve was right there to prevent a high pressure surge down the whip.

Re: Which 02 Decanting Hose Kit

I use components from Colin Glass at Undersea - he supplies and makes very high quality stuff and has a comprehensive catalogue, also makes panels if you are in the marketplace.

He might not be the cheapest, but certainly not the most expensive, and you get what you pay for. His in-line needle valves (product #6000 Mk 2) are about the best on the market.

You can get decanting hoses complete with all fittings and analogue or digital gauge, or just pick up the bits you need individually.

catalogue: http://www.undersea.uk.com/catalogue/catalogue.pdf

And he's a nice bloke and damned helpful.

One more vote for Undersea. I use Undersea products a lot.

They also have nice DIN plugs. I have them on every tank.
