Re: The DSSCCD

Great stuff Aaron, makes for a great read. I've been really keen to get hold of a small military rebreather for a while now and this unit seems like it might fit the bill (was looking at the LARs, IDAs etc)

Have a big blob of grolly for your efforts! Hopefully be over to Tekstreme over the winter. Hopefully see you then!

Regards,

Nick

Re: The DSSCCD

Hi All,
i was quite lucky when i bought the unit as i got pretty much another one as spares with it. I have around 10 spiders for the mask and a dozrn nose clips. The ball weights are not an issue. I only used 2 KG in the unit when i took it foir the dives and the 1KG pieces we get here fit in the weight pouch nicely.
I still have contact in the Navy that can get me spares and my old cox'n of the boat i was on is now a Warrant Officer Diver in charge of mix gas diving.
If anyone knows where to get the "guard all" stuff Ian was on about, i would be most gratefull if you can tell me.
If anyone is interested in a unit, i know a guy who has one for sale

Regards
Aaron.

The "Armor All" is available from any auto car shop its used to shine up and protect rubber vinyl and plastic. We used it for 20 years for rubber and plastics. In UK its available in Halfords (a car spares shop) however in USAF Lakenheath Px its 1/3 the price! url is Armor All® - Make Your Car Beautiful Inside & Out! they were local in Oakland CA.
I cannot say if its the best stuff to use but its been OK. Great idea talking to the vintage guys they would know for sure.
If you still have a contact RN get as much spares as you can, french chalk the lot, separate the rubber folds with that brown paper and black binliner or air tight tin the smaller parts. We have still 6 new boxed SDDE sets and some CDBA about 20 sets of spares all cool and dry black boxed and sealed.
None of the parts are made so its a limited life for the old kit.
I guess this was at one time the biggest single closed CCR set around there must be 1000's of ex CD's brought up on it seems a shame RN didnt make more of its histrory. Iain

Re: The DSSCCD

Hi
i know someone that has a complete brand new cdba and is looking at getting rid of it. It has never been dived thats how good condition it is. Only thing missing is the ball weights and copper wire to hold the valves in on the counter lung.Let me know if still intersted.

VERY NICE ARTICLE!! i love those CDBA's and someday hope to own one. instead of the original round lead weights, have you considered getting a mold for 1lb cannonball fishing weights, and making them without the wire eye? that could help prevent the originals being "lost". you may well be able to find the cannonball lead weight molds in larger sizes if you needed to. just an idea.

Iain you may want to look into what the vintage scuba divers do with their double hose regulators, and the duckbills in then in particular to preserve them inbetween use. the duckbills were notorious from my LIMITED understanding, for getting gummy and going to !t. also if someone has any info on care and maintainance of the old vintage frogman drysuits, that may of of help.

some links that may be of use for you:

Vintage Scuba Supply.. they have a great forum and alot of helpful people, IIRC there is even an old PJ on there with ALOT of realworld experience.
Vintage Scuba Supply - Antique Diving Gear Two Hose Regulators

Vintage Double Hose.... there are some very helpful and knowledgable people on this forum. in particular i would direct you twords BroxtonChuck. very nice man, and quite helpful. there is another on there that is incredibly knowledgeable, one of the first LA County Instructors IIRC, but damned if i can remember his name. this is going to p!$$ me off until i remember it. anyhows.. like i said some good knowledgable members.
Vintage Double Hose

Replica Drysuit.. maker of replica vintage latex rubber drysuits... the owner, i believe is William Sewell, is also a rebreather diver, and has a very nice homebuilt ARO-57 clone. he has some videos that can be downloaded as well. quite a nice guy when i emailed him for information on his suits. his o2 rigs are listed on JWB's site under the NL_ Database Oxygen Rebreather section. he may be of some help.
Vintage Style Molded Latex Rubber Dry Suits Available from Customworks

hope this is of some help to you.
