We timed it yesterday....it took just over 2 seconds from swimming to turn off both overhead valves completely. Got it on video if someone want to see... Anders! I dont have time to dig out my dry suit right now and get it on film now but I am happy to post something asap. I believe if the suit is stopping the diver from doing a shutdown it is a dangerous situation and things must be altered, bigger suit, longer webbing, longer crotch strap (no more camel toe) or maybe some stretching. I dont agree its more important on CCR then on OC to have a fast shut down. Both are important but on CCR you have a lot more alternatives. This is why -You have enough bail out, right? -If its the Dil side that goes you are going up anyway and dont need the ADV. If you are in a cave or a wreck and can not go straight up you can always take a breath from your bail out and inhale to the loop or the wing. -If the O2 goes you can still dive SCR. Sorry this is no longer about trim but it is a interesting topic.... Cheers Roger Last edited by rogeringebo : 27th May 2008 at 09:17. |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Re: Which rebreather has best trim The vast majority of units are valve down and people generally arent having any major trim issues. Some must be I guess - but most arent Having valves down is alot easier and more comfy to reach than up, valves,1st stages and hoses are better protected too. Frankly It doesnt apear to matter if Im diving small stages, large sidemounts, sidemounts an a bob, no bob, any combo of the above with a drysuit with a thick or a thin undergarment., carrying an axe or not - I jump in sort my trim out and go- I dont personally seem to need any trick to get ok trim on any unit Ive dived. Maybe Im special re: suggestion that its not a bigger risk losing dil on a Rebreather over OC. Remember many units run inflation and adv off dil. I once lost all my dil from my inspo whilst inside a wreck at 45m. To get back out of this wreck I had to descend 2 deck levels (inside the confines of the ship that was upside down) . Back then I didnt have a qc or lp inflator hose off my bail tank so basically I had no wing inflation. Getting down and out the wreck was a nightmare-major silt out as dropping down deck levels I had no bouyancy and was trying to do that whilst manually adding dil to my collapsing cl from oc bail stage! and trying when I could to orally inflate wing. It was very tough. I hit the last deck flat out in a bellow of silt got caught up in the line, couldnt see anything, no adv! Not a good day out. Not easy to orally inflate wing and orally add dil to CL at same time and without losing bouyancy/trim. I exited the wreck covered in rust and not for the usual (good) reason...was one of my earliest Rebreather wreck dives Lots of lessons learnt (especially the 'stop and sort yourself out 1st, lesson') I suspect the more one dives the easier auto obtaining good trim (and auto adjusting for variables) becomes no matter the unit/set up. Check out Lamar :- http://www.rebreatherworld.com/photo...ction-pic.html Lamar has amazing trim - best Ive ever dived with. Not only valves down but a girt big heavy battery pack at the base of his Meg too. Check out this pic Phil Short took of me on my boris course, one of my first dives on the unit. Note the huge lead weights and steel bail Im carrying and the trim. I now dive the same unit, same drysuit but with no lead at all - and yet my trim is just as easy to hold.....why? I honestly dont know. I suspect its because I make it that way.

MikeThanks for the idea on a new skill to practise and spice up the long quarry dives. Also, sounds like a skill that should be on an advanced CCR course. Here is your warm and fuzzy for the day.....yes we all think you are very special....don't let anyone tell you otherwise. John |
