How much would you pay for a Mark 15??????

I'm not asking for any commitments here. I'm just trying to establish a rough market value for a Mark 15 (NOT a 15.5 or 16). The unit in question would have a standard analog secondary, a Hammerhead primary, and would otherwise be in good condition (ready to dive). Inconnel spheres would be included.

Thanks,
Charlie

Re: How much would you pay for a Mark 15??????

Depends on a series of factors.

Years ago they would sell for 30k.
I have seen units for 15k more recently, with spheres and working electronics. Big factors are the condition of the spheres and the rear counterlung (in my opinion.)

Recently the units that came out of storage were in terrible condition with all kinds of problems and missing parts. They were sold very cheap. They seemed more of a problem then a value.

There was an mk15 on Ebay that had the spheres replaced and was on sale for 12 or 15k. I can’t remember all the details. I think it was one of Joe’s D’s but cannot confirm that. Decoweenie sold his not so long ago he might provide a better ball park.

If the sphere and electronics are in good condition, with a counter lung in good condition you should be able to get 15k and up.
If the unit has good pedigree and the Hammerhead is current then all the better. Also the condition of the electronics pod will matter.
Is the piping still stainless steel or replaced with plastic hosing another thought.

This is just my simple thoughts after watching the sale of these units for a few years.

Good luck if you are trying to establish pricing or value.
If I had 12k sitting around and needed and expedition unit then it would be a good deal.

Regards, Andrew

Re: How much would you pay for a Mark 15??????

I would say a unit of the type you are describing would be $10K. A just redone unit might be $13K. I am in eternal saving mode for one, but keep finding other ways to spend money on diving...one day.

Re: How much would you pay for a Mark 15??????

I sold my Juergensen-refurbished MK-15 in Jan-2005 with:
  • 2 Inconel spheres with DIN valve/reg
  • 2 composite spheres with DIN valve/reg
  • HH digital electronic
  • J/S digital electronic
  • Whitey valve modification for external diluent plug-in
  • Titanium custom-made external tank bracket
  • MK-16 Navy carrying case
  • 2 brand new spare sensors for secondary display
  • spare hoses
  • spare brass hose connectors
  • BOV
  • spare Bendix cable
  • LOTS of small spare parts collected over the years...
Sold everything for US$11,000 (valued at US$17,000).

It was a great deal but I still got jerked around by couple of buyers.

This was before the 20+ e-Bay new MK-15 appeared that some were bought for ~US$2000 a piece (minus spheres). Some of those are now refurnished and for sale, so the price should be even lower.

The day I sold the unit was the second happiest day I had with it!

Because it is MY personal feeling and opinion. Am I not allowed ?

Not as much as I would like, but yes.

What didnt you like about it?
Weight, spare parts, reliability etc.

Again, just part of my own experience and feeling of having owned the unit close to 5 years. I am sure your experience is different, and I am very jealous of it...

Er hello? of course your allowed! I only asked why your opinon is such. I dont suppose you just woke up one morning and didnt like the 15 I figured you must have a good reason. I was interested in knowing what you disliked about your unit thats all. A genuine interest. I dont dive a 15 (15.5 is completeley different as you know, but i know the 15 to be a very well designed unit that Ive never heard anyone really complain about them - so I was genuinely interested in what problems you had

yeh weight is an issue if you compare it to many modular units such as the Meg/kiss or modern units like vision - but its lightter than Boris . For travel I like units that are modular.

What actual reliability problems did you have?...If you dont mind me asking? Problems with the electronics is about the only fault I ever hear about 15s. Was that the issue with yours? Did yours have the original or the hammerhead electronics in it?

Period of ownership as you know means nothing. Its the amount of in water time that counts. Hence my question.

My experience isnt all that relevant seeing as Ive never owned or dived a MK15 so cant comment. The only relevant thing I can say is that the parts which are interchangeable (with 15.5) I had no issues with reliability wise or spares wise.
