Cheaper replacement cells for Inspirations?

I just spotted these cells supposedly as direct replacements for the cells in the Inspiration.

Golem Gear, Inc. - R-22D Oxygen Sensor

Now if I did my sums right the price is about £38... significantly less than buying them in the UK at anywhere I've asked for prices. That is assuming you don't get stung for import duty and my past experience of that is it's a lottery. If you did get stung I'd say they'd cost you about the same as over here anyway so you aren't going to lose.

But...

Do any of you techie types know if it actually is a direct equivalent replacement for the cells AP sell?

Cheers...

Re: Cheaper replacement cells for Inspirations?

Those are Teledyne sensors.

Take a read HERE.

Re: Cheaper replacement cells for Inspirations?

Now I'm completely confused... the ones on the site you linked to are the same make and number aren't they? Which should you use and which should you not? Is it the R22D that is a no no or the Bud suffixed cells?

Do I take it that you don't use Teledyne then?

Help!!!!

Sorry to be so thick but they're even the same price...

Best wishes,

Re: Cheaper replacement cells for Inspirations?

Martin,

I can't tell what you do and don't know about Teledyne sensors, but your instructor should have explained all of these clearly so you could make an informed choice.

Real brief summary:
  • Both R22BUD-2 (sold by APD) and R22D (sold by different sources, mainly from Oxycheq) are both manufactured by Teledyne.
  • You could only buy R22BUD-2 from APD, AFAIK, since they were made specifically for APD.
The rest of the differences, you should be able to get from this LINK.

There are some links within the Oxycheq website discussing about the difference between Teledyne sensors and others. Take a look...

Personally, I use both interchangeably but I don't want to influence anyone's choice regarding which one to use. So I just direct you to the sites giving the information, and you make your own decision.

You could also ask your instructor for recommendation.

Nope..
all Teledyne diving cells have had hydrophobic membrances for several years..

Internally there USED to be a difference (for a period of time) between r22-buds and R22-d..

The original r22-bud was still using the old temperature compensating ckt when the r22ds were upgraded.. a year or 2 later the buds became internally identical again.. I don't remember what the change was but it was not really significant..

I also know of an occasion (I saw the email) that happened a few years ago where someone elses cells were sent to AP (with permission and the labels changed) because AP was out of cells and theirs were not ready from production..

The difference that APD claims is that their cells undergo additional testing to qualify them for use in the Inspiration..

in the US R22bud cells retail for $99 while R22d cells from oxycheq retail for $70.. Dealer cost for the BUD cell is more than the retail price for the R22-d cell..

Re: Cheaper replacement cells for Inspirations?

teledyne vrs the ai cells vrs the buds

designing a "system using proprietary cells" that have direct replacements is just another profit center for the company. I have tested the teledynes and the ai's in the pot for over 500 hrs and so far have 68 hrs of water time on them, using a mixed set. the ai's have a slightly faster responce time on average, and have a little better temp comps. that said both cells are fine for the job at hand. my suggestion is buy the newest cells you can get for the cheapest price. but if you send your unit to ap for service with aftermarket cells or without cells, they will require them to be replaced.
