Aargh! Bloody cells!

Bloody cells! Why won't they just work. I bet it's because I washed my undersuit a few weeks back. [1]

Way back in April I had three working cells in a rebreather, and a spare in a sealed bag. But they were all 18 months old so I bought four new cells from AP and swapped them in.

All was well for a few dives.

Then cell 2 failed low. No matter how much O2 I injected I couldn't get the mV high enough for the Shearwater to calibrate.

So I swapped cell 2 for the spare (cell 4) and sent cell 2 back to AP for a refund under their guarantee.

I dived with cell 4 for a bit, but then I started having the strange non-linear problem (HERE). Whereby the cell would read high when saturated with moisture.

AP checked cell 2, and sent it back to me saying it was fine, and they wouldn't refund my money So I swapped it back for cell 4 (moving the cells to different positions in the unit) and went for a dive, keeping a careful eye on it.

Now it seems that cell 2 is exhibiting the strange "high-when-wet" phenomenon. Plus. When I put it in the Shearwater originally, it read 11.3mV in air. Now it reads just 7.2mV in dry air.

Aaaargh. Bloody cells. Time for some new ones.

Janos

That sucks Janos.

What you need is one of THESE babies!

Cell checker from Narked@90

I shall be washing my undersuit today and two fingers to superstition. I shall also be kicking black cats, walking under ladders etc etc.

A clean undersuit is less likely to spontaneously combust in the presence of O2...

2 of my cells months old are on the very limit that the inspo will take.

Will be double checking that they are screwed and send them back

Hum. Well I just hope that AP honour their warranty. I'll be writing a Strongly Worded Letter next week. Two dodgy cells means I'm £100 down, but what's more of a concern is the fact that they are not reliable.

I have always used R22-BUDs from AP in the past but am now very strongly tempted by the AII offering from the Rebreather World shop. Not because of price, I hasten to add. I'd happily pay the extra for a reliable cell, but because AP told me (after I'd sent the cell back) that they'd checked it and it was ok, when actually it's faulty.
