| RebreatherWorld Sponsor ![]() Current Rebreather/s: | Re: Arrrrrggghhh V4Tec BOV I have just completed building a BOV that uses oring seals on the barrel face. The inside diameter of the breathing bore is 28 mm. The whole thing is considerably more compact than the Kiss, V4tec, Golem and Cis Lunar. WOB is very low and internals are balanced Scubapro G250HP. This one does hold a pos or negative over night AND is easy to operate. The spigots OD is 44 mm so, aprat from the Pelagian, it also fits Meg hoses perfect and also Inspiration, Prism and a few others with a bit of stretching. The flapper valves are Draeger, so they are flat, made for Rebreather use and gives less resistance than 2nd stage exhalation valves. The mouthpiece plate can be swapped in 2 minutes for another plate with a double oringed p-connector for use with the Draeger Panorama FFM. The BOV section can be rotated for LP hose on left or right side. I belive this is now the worlds most compact BOV. It took nearly a year to finalize so I hope there are a lot of BOV hungry divers out there! Cheers, Andy Hi Mark- I’ve built several BOVs with the rotating spool layout and I’ve learned a lot in the process. Here is what is most likely going on: The EXTERNAL seal- to keep water out of the loop- is the O ring on the spool near whatever serves the function of a face plate/ spool retainer. The gas leaks that cause failure of the neg test occur within the loop- thru the mouthpiece as stated above. A BOV indeed CAN be built to allow a spool type design a decent neg test, but it ain’t easy. I found that the tolerance spool to body has to be in the 0.0005” range- yes 5 ten thousandths of an inch. The final seal is then achieved with lube in the spool to body interface. No O rings involved. With this tight a clearance my BOV does good +/_ tests, but the spool is not an easy “flick” to twist ala Jetsam. The slight extra effort required to twist a spool vs how other more complex designs function is worth it to me because the internal bore is a LOT larger = lower WOB. A spool design could be designed gas tight another way as well but would require some pretty exotic milling or molding gear that would allow O ring grooves to be produced on the face of a cylindrical shape. WAAAAAY beyond the capability of my stone age shop………… Clear as mud, right? Best, Ken |

Cant the hose cuffs be stretched a bit to go direct on the 44 mm OD BOV spigots? What is the OD of the Kiss QC spigot? All the best, Andy It certainly looks like a nice bit of kit, i don't suppose you'll be adapters to fit the KISS QC's or make your own QC's for KISS hoses? Cheers |

![]() | Re: Arrrrrggghhh V4Tec BOV On a recent dive trip we deco'd out at 6m on pure O2. In order to do this I rotated the V4tec BOV to OC and released the loop. I then breathed off an OC reg on the deco bar. Imagine my surprice then when I flooded my counterlungs because the V4tec does not isolate between the OC and CC sides of the BOV. Keep this in mind when you are selecting a BOV! I'm now looking for a new BOV and a FFM t go with it. Regards, |
