Re: V4tec Bov

Now I have tested a little. Swagelos are still out of the system because I don`t have all the bits and pieces yet.

I am still a bit puzzled about the neg/pos testing. Mine seems to suck air in from the mouthpiece. I tested it also in a bucket of water with neg test. It sucked some water to the exhale side, but no bubbles were coming out from the BOV or hoses.

Any ideas?

During dives I have not got water in but still...

Re: V4tec Bov

I wouldn't worry too much about it. Since there is no seal between the body and the rotating barrel, there will always be a tiny bit of gas leaking. The only way this affects your practical diving is:

1 - It makes it a bit time consuming to do the - and + pressure tests. You could cut a rubber plug for the mouth piece and keep the LP hose connected and the Dil tank off for a good negaitve test. For a positive it gets trickier as you will have to seal off the exhaust diaphragm of the reg.

2 If you plan on "staging" your Rebreather under water and pick it up later, you MAY find the loop flooded. It all comes down to HOW much it leaks.

The Pelagian BOV is very similar to the V4 Tec, i.e. we do not use any o-ring seals between OC and CC. If you want seals everywhere AND want a large bore for low WOB, then the body will have to be bigger. Then it will weigh more and feel heavy, create drag etc.

Conclusion: If you give priority to a compact BOV and low WOB you will have to live with smaller leaks. If you want a 100% gas tight seal you will need to get a Divematics or other BOV that uses seals between every port.

Tip: Experiment with silicone grease of differing viscosity until you find one that is a perfect balance between easy rotating of the barrel and restricts the leak.

Re: V4tec Bov

Thanks for the info!

I am not really concerne about the BOV leaking. The thing that worries me if something else is also leaking because I can`t be sure.

I will try different silicones. I just opened it and but some APValves silicone on the barrel. Need to test if it made any difference.

Re: V4tec Bov

Last weekend I didi two dives with the BOV. I got maybe 2-3 dl of water into the exhale lung. I could actually hear and feel the leak in the mouthpiece. I was wondering what is leaking.

At home I opened it up and found out that one of the two barrel sealing o-rings was cut. I must have broken it when I put it together last time. I put in a new ring, cleaned and lubed with AP silicon grease. Now it works great - no leaks and easy to operate. Tested on a 62m wreck dive yesterday and it works great
