jj-ccr user review and questions

Hi everyone,
I will start by saying I have had no prior experience with bov's. My wife was nice enough to get me one for christmas and I have been able to put 4 total dives on it. Two in 150' and two dives right around 80'fsw. I will say the wob was worse than I had anticipated. I have read many threads on bov's and wob, but still wanted the added safety feature of using one. I am having second thoughts now. I sure would love to compare it to the others out there, but will not part company with the dollars to do it. I do have a couple of guys who dive with me that have different bov's on their respective units, so we might all swap one day and compare apples to apples.
I would like input from others if it is just a given to give up wob over a factory meg dsv? I also tried switching to oc several times. Easy process, but not once did I have a dry mouth. I will be diving it again this week and will play more in the shallows with it to see. I was able to breath it both cc and oc, but oc definitely was wet! Don't like that. Any suggestions, criticisms or otherwise consructive additions would be greatly appreciated.

Hi

If you remove and take again an OC regulator underwater in your mouth - what are the first steps before you start breathing again? Exhale or push the button to flush the regulator. This is exactly what you have to do when you switch from CC to OC mode using the BOV. Try this with the JJ-CCR BOV and you will have dry air to breathe in OC mode.

I can't agree with the worse WOB. The WOB of the JJ-CCR BOV is just great. My personal feeling is that it is even better than my Golem Gear BOV with the new valves. This was my impression after some dives.

If you installed an inline shutoff valve, make sure that the valve is always in open postion during the dive. Otherwise you can damage the OC part of the BOV. Close the inline shutoff valve only when you have a problem a problem with the OC part of the BOV.

As soon as I have a bit more time, I will write an review for the JJ-CCR BOV on my HammerMEG. But the first impression is: Superb WOB (OC and CC), easy to operate, well made and extremly small (looks more like a DSV than a BOV).

Wow, quite inciteful. Thanks for pointing out what everyone on this board should already know. Of course I purged the reg. The reg breathed wet. I will point out that these are my observations, based on MY experience. The wob was noticeably decreased compared to the stock meg dsv. I can't speak for other units wob. All I have to compare to is the stock meg dsv. From an engineering standpoint it is a very well made piece of kit. I am a machinist by trade and can say it is remarkable. I am hoping this is something I can work through, and or fix if it is possible. I can only tell anyone my observations based on my four dives of the bov.
I will say it felt no different than the stock dsv. That is, I didn't even know it was there other than the slightly increased wob from the stock dsv.
there is no inline shutoff valve on the unit yet, so that didn't affect anything. I plumbed it direct. There was pressure on the oc reg at all times. I will continue to dive the unit and tweak it until I decide it stays or gets put on the shelf or put up for sale.

Gene,

Hope you have better luck with your BOV, I had to adjust mine out of the box.
I am sure you have seen this on their website, but here is the link to adjusting the regulator.

I hope this helps solve your issue, I like mine very much.
If this does not help, there is always that chance of it "just being a bad one". If the adjustment does not help, and this is the case, give Jan a shout and I am sure they will exchange it.
Best of luck with you, glad to hear you out diving below the Cape, I have been blown out here a lot lately.

Shoot a note back to JJ and mention that it's breathing wet. I think there's a tweak that might need to be done, so the advice (as always) is to ask the maker.... they know more about it than we do. Methinks there are a few bad exhaust flappers floating around (mine needed one too). The exhaust valve is Scubapro so it's off the shelf stuff if you need a new exhaust flapper (which is what it sounds like you might need). They ought to be dry after being purged. This part is not a JJ part, so blame Scubapro. Ping JJ and ask them.

The open circuit breathing resistance is adjustable, and every owner ought to know how to do this, so take a look at the cited resources and have at it.

This makes me a little worried. Hope they can get the bugs worked out before they sell a pile of them. I've been eyeballing the JJ for a few months now, and I have pretty much decided that's the one I want, and can't wait to get one. I'm gonna need some different ends to fit my Dolphin hoses, and I keep getting very sketchy responses from Jan. I'll send an email, and a week or so goes by with no reply. I'll send another and get a short reply without my questions answered in a way I can understand them. I can't get a straight answer about my hose needs. I sent a reply to his email nearly three weeks ago and haven't heard squat. I don't know if he's an incredibly busy guy, or if he's not getting my emails. I'll give it till after the first and try again.

Gene, if you decide to bail on the JJ (no pun intended:D) I might be interested in taking it off your hands. I think I'm ultimately going to need special ends made up, so to get one in the US would make that a little easier.

Hi Gene

I would be interested in switching my Golem with you JJ so that we can both make a judgement on the Meg. I am tentatively planning to dive at Dutch on Wed and maybe a local Quarry near me on Thu. Let me know if you are interested in getting togeather for a dive and we can switch before we splash.

Okay everybody I do want to make one thing clear. I am in no way trashing the quality or usablility of the JJ bov. My main question is whether or not I should expect to give up a little wob to gain the safety margin on the bov itself? The me stock dsv wob is encredible in my opinion, and all I can say is that the JJ is slightly harder to breathe than the factory meg dsv.
Dave, I will shoot them a pm about the exhaust valve issue. I am well aware on the adjustment procedure for the oc reg. I would have no problem bailing with it, but do agree that once you purge it should be dry and it definitely isn't.
Any new product is going to have growing pains. It is just part of the process. The build quality of the bov is superb. As I get more dives on the unit I will continue to report what I find. But remember, opinions are like arseholes, everybodies got one. And anything I report will be my opinion.

Hey John,
Sounds good to me. I would love to do a comparison like that. I am still hoping to be able to get the boat out Thursday. Looks like an afternoon trip might still be possible, so I will wait and see how the weather gods are going to act. Were only averaging a trip about every ten days so far this season die to the winds mostly. I might hook up with you if it doesn't look good for Thursday.

It would apear that a small number of the scubapro exhaust valves do not seal properly, they will be swapped as soon as possible if you are unlucky enough to get one with a fault email Jan as soon as you can.

I am suprised about the WOB being worse than the meg dsv though, was the meg fitted with two different diameters of breathing hose?

If you dont get any reply from Jan address your questions or problems to me and I will make sure they get answered
