BOV and DPV diving

i am considering adding a bov. however i scooter a lot and am concerned about the drag and jaw fatigue w/o the use of a FFM. like to hear from those who DPV dive with a bov and their experiences. the only game in town for the optima appears to be the Golem gear unit, at present. i am sure it functions well, but the cross section seems large, so the drag while on the DPV and subsequent jaw fatigue looks to be an issue.

thanks

Re: BOV and DPV diving

Several people have added "chin rests" to help with BOV's leverage, particularly when scootering.

I have scootered without one and its fine, as long as you look straight ahead!

Re: BOV and DPV diving

I would have thought the drag on the hoses far outweighs the drag on the slightly bigger centre piece.

I can't actually comment more because I've had the BOV longer than the scooter.

Re: BOV and DPV diving

Jeff,

Howard and I did a dive the other day in a pretty stiff current. I had to abort my dive for scooter reasons, but I thought I'd let you know how the BOV and scooter worked together. The boat's GPS was registering a 1.6 to 1.9 knot north current with just a slight easterly crosswind. With the Submerge set to prop position 9, the highest, there was incredible flow over my gear. The Drager mask held the BOV in place with no problems what so ever, and there is no jaw fatigue since the five point mask harness distributes the force. Howard was diving his Optima with the BOV mouth piece and half mask.

I have dived the BOV without the mask, but not with the scooter. I found the BOV to create jaw fatigue only when swimming against strong currents, and not noticeable in standard conditions. Unfortuneatly, the BOV is really needed in the heavy conditions, and therefore, I have decided to stick with the FFM whenever possible.

You may want to talk directly with Howard (Scubadadmiami) and Marc (MarcLaukien) about their use of the Optima with the Golem BOV while scootering. They both have or had the same setup and scooter. As a matter of fact, Marc (now diving a HHCCR) and I are planning to do a scooter dive tomorrow. You are more than welcome to join us!

If you want to try the FFM in the pool, let me know.

Eric

Re: BOV and DPV diving

I have scootered on wrecks with a Golum BOV, i havent noticed it to be an issue. I can rest it on my chest without any mods?? But i have only ever felt the need to do this on long deco or on the boat waiting to get in.

Jaw ache from bov's is best dealt with using apropriate mouthpieces or a gag.
I use a moulded mouthpiece thats griped by the teath at the back of the jaw. It seems to work well.

Well, there is an imminent solution to that: high oil prices.

Come over to the dark side and fly for Big Brother Airlines. What's bad is good if you catch my drift.

Re: BOV and DPV diving

I used to have the KISS BOV but found it absolutely brutal when scootering. I could not do anything over an hour 1/2 without my jaw really hurting.

I have fitted the Halcyon BOV to my KISS with some nice sleek streamlined hoses and could not be happier.

IMHO you need a chin rest if you are scootering

Re: BOV and DPV diving

I do several hour scooter dives into the current with no jaw fatigue. But then I have a strong jaw or maybe it is the Seacure bite piece.
