Re: Start with a BOV

I vote yes but, the BOV should not replace a second offboard 2nd stage.

Skill to remove the BOV-DSV to replace with offboard 2nd stage should be developed and practised.

Ever have a mouthpeice disconnect? or need to save a buddy?

That was an excercise many times repeated during training. You mention other reasons but I think the primary reason is that most often BOV is on onboard diluent which is emptied in a matter of minutes necessitating the switch to the secondary offboard 2nd stage.

If the unit is equipped with it, it will be used during class.
Probably not exclusively, but it'll be part of it.
Otherwise you wouldn't be learning that particular unit,
and unit specific courses would not be needed.
I know more than one instructor that when suggesting a final "meg" configuration to a student they include a Golem BOV from the start.

They then make this part of the training program.

My thoughts are they should be fitted to all Rebreathers as standard equipment!!

Lance
I couldn't agree more. They should have been fitted as standard to all commercialy available Rebreather's years ago.

This is why it should be there from the start so it's all included in the course.

Oh yeah, your right. I'm accustomed to having the BOV fed by offboard (I can switch to onboard if needed). I meant even in this config (which prevents the surprise emptying of a small OB tank).

yo

As far as I know they are not forbidden under any training agency standards and are free to choose as a wing style, color or size.

greetings
Matt
