Re: BOV Use Poll

yo

I dive a Rebreather 80 clone and classic KISS, both with BOV. My Megalodon and Optima don't have one. I am in the process of getting one for my Megalodon.

The discussion on Rebreather World was helpfull in the educational process on my behalf in regards to the BOV and survivasbility of certain CCR related emergency issues.

If I was sitting on the fence before so to speak in regards to BOV's, inbetween yes or ney ..... I think now a BOV can and will make all the difference in making it out of the drink alive or not. It is potentially a live saver.

Re: BOV Use Poll

I cannot imagine not using one. Its like the old seat belt argument where once in a blue moon someone supposedly died because they had a set belt on. Concentrating on those rare times & ignoring the overwhelming % of the accidents where the seat belt saved lives. Ya gotta go with the odds as you see them. A BOV will not help if you have a caustic cocktail so you change to your bailout reg just like you would if you did not have BOV no? Where is the downside to using a BOV?

I am always a BOV-proponent...

...but just for the sake of discussion, I will throw some out there so we have representations from both sides...
  • BOVs are, in general, heavier even in water.
  • BOVs have more drag in water.
  • BOVs have, in general, higher WOB which could lead to retaining CO2.
  • BOVs have more components to fail (i.e. like leaky 2nd stage) that could jeopardize safety (i.e. turn diluent off).
  • BOVs could give a fault sense of security, especially when configured incorrectly.
  • BOVs could be more dangerous when plumbing to hypoxic gas, and bail-out to it in surface emergencies when panick.

And yet i wouldent dive a CCR without one.

Golum is V/good with excellent customer support.

Re: BOV Use Poll

For me, a BOV is an essential piece of equipment. I added a Golem BOV to my Optima, which is connected to off-board bail-out. It took me quite awhile to find a comfortable hose routing. It would be nice if it wouldn't be up to the user to figure that out, but if all manufacturers would at least offer the option to upgrade their CCRs to a BOV with plumbing to off-board bail-out.

Re: BOV Use Poll

The BOV was one of the prime reasons for my KISS purchase. Clearly the kit was designed for safety.

Personally I can not believe all Rebreather don't offer this as an option. Why should the end user have to spend $$ for a DSV, then more to upgrade, when they want a BOV from the start.

Re: BOV Use Poll

Hello,

I purchased one shortly have I got the Meg. Last month I decided to install it and not wait the recommended 50 or 100 dives. I think the safety advantage of the BOV was more important.
