Actually Mark,

Pure helium is used as a diluent on the Canadian CUMA rebreather (also see Carleton Viper) and it is a pretty cool unit . Mind you this particular Rebreather functions quite differently than your typical CCR/SCR. We've done some experimental dives using N2He mixtures as diluent last year and hope to do some more in the near future.
