For friendly service I would recommend:

1) Aquatic Adventures of Michigan in Brighton
2) Divers Incorporated in Ann Arbor
3) Sea the World in Farmington
4) Great Lakes Dive Center in Utica

I don't have any experience with Scuba Centers but I'm sure they are as good as the next shop for basic OW stuff.
