Welcome to Rebreather World, you could start off with a second hand unit and many are listed here on RBW that would require a lot less than 8K to get you going.
You may consider investing the Tekkie course fees into a ccr unit and MOD 1 course I believe Advanced Nitrox is the required cert level you could then progress your diving on CCR. You do not have to be a Tekkie to dive a re breather but if you do intend diving mix (helium based gas) it is likely you will end up with a CCR so try to spend any available funds with that in mind.
