I've been diving for 9 months now with the monochrome VR3, and with the Backlight on it is perfect. Now here is my disclaimer: I have not actually seen a Colour display VR3, so my next comment is just my opinion, but I have always felt that colour displays are a bit gimmicky
I've dived both & I find the colour screen much better in northern european waters (i.e. often dark/murky) . You do need to have the backlight on to get best results, so I'd say Lithium batteries are a must. (backlight light not effected by loss of light from red end with depth, like a torch)

I didn't find it such an advantage when diving in the red sea, in blue water diving I suspect a backlight monochrome screen may be better/as good.
