I like the Shearwater HUD and have no problem with the flashing led's. I found it very fast to spot when a cell is not tracking consistently as well as it should.
I have still to dive it in bright daylight, so I have no idea if the led's are bright enough to see them under these conditions

Here is how to connect it, I would suspect that it is more or less the same for all the other aftermarked HUD's
