Colin,
As you are diving the Vision, it computes the deco based on GF model.
If you use the VR-3, it uses Buhlmann + (Pyle-style) deep stops which won't match the deco profile. And yes, you could change the settings to have similar total RT, but not the profile.
If you use the Shearwater, it uses GF which you will be able to match profiles almost exactly.
Having said that, here are some random considerations based on my own experience and opinion:
- The VR-3 color screen is just freaking great. The best screen of all of the computer/BT units I have ever used. I wish all of them have that.
- Shearwater has a number of preset GF combinations. IMHO, they are all good and more popular combinations. But if you want to use something different (for whatever reason), it won't be possible. This is a very minor issue...
- I have always like the menu scheme on the VR-3 (over the HS, for example), but the Shearwater is even better.
- Size-wise, both VR-3 and Shearwater are approximately the same despite the different shapes. Bruce has upgraded the straps to be the same as the VR-3.
- VR-3 uses a more common battery type, but the Shearwater battery should last a lot longer.
