But, the 15/15.5 requires +/-12v, which is 24v all up, so requires 16 cells.
The standard 15/15.5 battery consists of 18 cells, giving +/- 13.5 volts for a total of 27 volts. No matter how you wire up eight cells, you're never going to run a 15/15.5 on them.

Would it not work this way:
2 * (1 * 9V + 3 * 1,5V = 13,5) = 27V ?
I.e. use four batteries for each side?
