What's funny to me is that the cables to the handsets are very thick and look sturdy-a nice selling point. My guess is that it's the flexy part where the cable glans meet the potted part under the plastic cover that's one part of the problem.
Steve I think you're right and my guess is that the material chosen is not able to handle the stress of the pressure and temp changes plus the stress relief on the cable glans is inadequet. I don't think, strictly speaking, any normal impact/wear and tear could explain all the cracked handsets. They should be able to dangle about til kingdom come without any problem. As long as the stress relief at the glans is done properly and the potted material resists expansion/contraction enough-hardness, they would be quite durable.
Personally, I think any dangly bits should be as small and as light as possible. -Andy
