GOZO / Malta (di-ve news) -- August 13, 2006 -- 1110CEST -- Two old vessels
MV Karwela and
MV Comino Land were scuttled at Ix-Xatt l-Ahmar in Gozo on Saturday afternoon.
The two vessels, which took over seven hours to sink, will now serve as an artificial reef for divers.
The operation started at 0600CEST with the use of air-filled buoyancy tanks, which ensured that the two ships settled at 35 metres below the sea.
Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi and Gozo Minister Giovanna Debono watched the operation, together with a large crowd of spectators on both land and sea.
Dr. Gonzi described the event as another link in the chain of events to boost tourism in both Malta and Gozo.
