A couple of answers from a biased perspective ...
There isn't a "beginner" rebreather. Some may be more
complex (Boris), others simpler (SportKISS), but the core
skills to pilot one have a lot in common.
Likewise, the question of "if you could only buy one.."
is not helpful. You can dive and be successful with nearly
any unit out there, but which unit suits you best is not
something you can tell with certainty without experience.
I would guess that folks who are trained on multiple units
did so by moving to owning another unit, rather than by
training in order to make a decision.
