I don't normally use it in the ocean, except as a "safety strap" - the cord when fully unwrapped can be clipped to a chest D-ring and yet not get in the way at all - but if you drop the camera for some reason, its still tethered.
My rig runs just slightly negative - I have buoyancy tubes on the light "wings" to balance it, and the battery for the lamps is carried on my belt - an E/O cord takes care of being able to disconnect it.
