If the STA furnished is US in orgin the greatest likelyhood is that they are 5/16 x 18 tpi. For those across the pond, 8mm = .315", 5/16 = .313", and as such it can be very hard to tell apart. Calipers across the major diameter is not reliable, as it is common for threaded fasteners usually run undersize.

8mm x 1.25 lead = 20.32 Threads per inch vs the 18 tpi on 5/16. Count the threads per inch.

Alternatively get a nut of known thread and see if it fits, don't force it!
