You can also glue the velcros to correct places after you have cut the band to correct length.

The velcros are not necessary if you bend the lock on the band but they make sure that the lock won`t accidentally open.

I have mine set up like that and I was actually able to put some weights on the band while diving at Red Sea. I did not need to use a weight belt.
