Re: OT: rebreather mask for emergencies

Tough question to answer.

If you want protection just from air-bourne contaminates you would have to know in advance what contaminates you are trying to filter out if you want a simple facepiece with filter cartridges. Cartridges are certified for specific contaminates and no one unit will work for everything.

If you want supplied breathing atmosphere you can achieve a 4-hour maximum duration with a closed-circuit rebreather. These devices are only meant for the highly trained user and are not suitable for the "Every day Joe". You might find reluctance by any manufacturer of such units to even sell one to you. List prices for such devices can run from $3000-$15,000.

Open-Circuit devices (Such as what fire fighters utilize) will supply a 30-60 minute duration and do not require the high level of user training. However one must ask the question of what is 60-minutes of air supply going to do for you? Can you get away from the perceived threat in that amount of time?

There is really no simple solution to this issue for the general public. Would suggest that if something does in your area to simply get out there as quickly as possible.
