Greetings and Question re: Rebreathers with best CO2 sensing capabilities?...

Greetings all,

I am a 44 year old professional IT consultant & engineer who has recently gotten into recreational diving with my twin brother Michael. We got our Advanced Scuba Diver certs from NAUI recently, and are gaining interest in rebreather technology.

It would appear there are still challenges rebreathers face re: their ability to sense accurately & reliably CO2 levels in the re-processed air...

Would anyone care to elaborate on this?

I want to understand this challenge as fully as possible, so that I am a well-informed soon-to-be-rebreather diver.

Here's what I'd like to know:
Q1 - WHY is it so difficult to sense CO2 in an airstream?

Q2 - WHAT technologies are out there?

Q3 - WHICH technologies are the safest?

Q4 - WHAT improvements/innovations does anyone know about?

I know I may sound timid, but when one is contemplating dives down below 120 ft (say even to 300 ft), and learns he can pass out (read "die") in the blink of an eye, it makes one want to do some homework first...
