I think the dive planned should determine the "amount of planning involved". Anyone is going to treat a 130' wreck dive differently than a 300' dive. I would have no problem extending the bottom time on a 130' dive from 40 to 60 min. if everything is going well. On deep dives I always stick to a predetermined dive plan. I always dive with multiple computers , (3) and back up tables. However if ANYTHING goes wrong, no matter how minor I END my dive.

Ability, comfort level and experience are still the best tools to use when planning a dive. I can't recall many deaths when these 3 factors intelligently governed a dive plan.
