I know I could go ala' Tom Rose with a large ball valve but how would you whip something on a simple home lathe? Make the cage from PVC and melt a bit of PVC tubing and glue it on? Delrin doesn't glue too well so I am somewhat stumped...

I've made them from PVC and aluminum and the method is the same. While in tube form I just machine off .030 to .045" except for the last 1/8 inch. In other words making all but the last 1/8 of the tube thinner. That becomes the notch that inserts nicely into the inner grove average mouth grip. PVC I heat and bend to look just like the male part of any regulator body at the point you install the mouth grip. Same with aluminum.
