Gear is not everything, a certain level of physical and mental fitness is an absolute requirement for succes.
Its not about fitness, after a dive you shouldn't be stressing yourself for a start. Secondly, its often a matter of urgency to get out of the water and minimise the skippers workload, thirdly its a Much quicker than having folk climb ladders in rough seas! (most of the time)

There used to be a boat up in Oban, Scotland which had a triple lift at the stern- no buddies waiting in the water for time to climb the ladder, or even the lift to return, much less stress to the skipper and the divers.
