On my Mod 1 I practised clearing. On Mod 3 we were liable to have our mask "removed" at any time . Sometimes we were even given it back. Also had to do a 20m open water swim (off the side of and around the top of a container) with mask removed and while controlling ppO2 manually.

Gee, all that was in my mod1 course! (apart from the container, we just swam along the sand) Bubbles from the clearing mask were a no-no as well.

Having a feeling of being at ease if you need to perform whichever 'drill' it is for real, like mask clearing, is just one of those necessary things. It keep us coming back for more (diving), literally. I'd include a few more things like:
  • physical loop recovery
  • dil flush
  • bailing to OC
  • surface removal and donning of rig (yeech, but very handy on small boats)
  • running in scr mode
  • manual add O2
There will be more, but it's too early to think today.
