In 2000, the U.S. government enacted the Shark Finning Prohibition Act, intending to make shark finning illegal. But the law only applied to
fishing vessels, not
all vessels - a loophole that has been grossly exploited.
On April 9, the Shark Conservation Act of 2008 was introduced, which would close the loophole and goes one step further for shark protection: it requires that all sharks be landed with their fins. This bill is a vital step in ensuring protection for global shark populations.
