A few suggestions:
1. Make sure you are using a fresh battery. I prefer the 3.6v batteries they seem to last a long time.
2. Clean the battery contacts real well.
3. Observe the correct polarity - obvious right
4. Make sure your push buttons are free to move in/out. Sometimes they may get stuck and prevent the unit from starting. You can take them apart and lube them.
