The older units with the metal handsets did have some issues. I know people that are still diving them without the upgrade however.

The upgrade is expensive. I don't know exactly how much. There is also software upgrades and the ability for secondary deco calculations.

Possibly you can train on the unit as-is and get the upgrade at a later time if/when needed.
