You have few options as most "close by" airports are at least 2 hours away if you plan to get a rental car. I will give you times driving in traffic.
San Diego is a ONE runway airport. It is the easiest to get through, get your luggage, get your rental car, or get a shuttle straight to your hotel. The boat ramps we will be launching from a within a few miles of the airport as well.
SNA - Orange County (2 hours)
LAX - Los Angeles (3 hours)
ONT - Ontario (2 hours)
