| Coniston is only overhead if you go off the pumping shaft. The shaft itself has a clear surface. According to the old surveys its 1400ft+ to the bottom.
There's another limestone mine in Derbyshire that is around 300m+ too. Again, it's a vertical shaft which intersects a natural cave at the bottom.
