I got my Meg that way. Clipping the disk is not a big deal unless you are planning on using the 1st stage non depth compensating in the future.

IMHO putting some type of disk in there should not be a problem. Would not need to have an o-ring if you reuse the diaphram. I have not tried this but I would even think taking the original disk out completely would not cause damage either. I took mine out and pushed the diaphram in with my finger until it bottomed out on the inside and nothing happened.
