| Re: LED Primary Light I have also been playing with an osram ostar (1000 lumen 6 emitter LED) for my homebuilt lights- so far it appears that it is brighter than my 10W MR11 HID (6deg bulb) but I have not managed a fantastic reflector of yet. As soon as I get home to my machines I have a number of other reflectors that I will be cutting down and trying out, But I have high hopes for the Ostar- not the least of which is that I can quit replacing HID bulbs after I break them hauling them around dry caves. I have not been happy with the multi LED lights- as others have said it is difficult to get a really nice beam with multiple plastic focusing elements, and some light is lost through that type of focusing element. The new multi-emitter LEDs, such as the ostar fix this problem- you only need one reflector, much easier to design around. Ideally, it would be nice to have a drop in replacement cartridge since most of the ostar plastic reflectors are designed around an MR11 size form. (As are Mini-Q 40 aluminum reflector elements, heh heh...)
Another cool part, which I have always wanted, is with the LED emitters, and certain power boards, you can select your brightness- obviously, most of the time you want the max- but when I survey, I always have the light right on my book, and it is blinding- it would be great to be able to drop it down to a useful brightness... hmmm...
