Re: Shipping Crates/Cases

Four birds with one stone:

First, when you order the boxes, buy several without tops, and you'll use them for lots of things not involvng airline travel. I have about 20 or so boxes, and at most 3 tops. Save a few bucks.

Yes, I simply drop my crap off at the check-in counter, get my claim tags, and walk to the gate with my briefcase and a cup of coffee. The lower-profile you are the less likely you are to have a problem. NO Pelican cases for me, in addition to being heavy, they shout 'expensive stuff to steal here!'. NO dive stickers, etc. Don't advertise. I just stencil with paint my name, address, and cellphone number on the fish-tote and check them in. They are so low-profile that they look like catalogs or whatever being shipped. Carry a rebreather as carry-on luggage? Get real.... do you REALLY want to hassle with TSA at security and need to carry all that crap? I have homeowners insurance... steal my rig and I get a new rig. I'm not a skycap, so I don't carry boxes thru airports. Never lost a thing yet.

Dunno about the TSA padlocks, there's no 'hasp' to speak of, the zip-ties simply tie the handle of the lid to the handle of the box. I suppose you could drill a pair of matching holes in the box handle and top handle and see about how a lock fits, as there are many TSA padlocks available from different vendors.

Shipment of the Mark-15 to California cost me about $60. Shipment of the same weight to South Africa three weeks ago cost nearly $450. Don't know to Turkey.
